Blood Pressure, Systolic

The first and higher number in a blood-pressure reading, indicating the pressure inside the arteries at the height of each pulse. Compare diastolic pressure. (To remember which reading is which, try associating blood pressure with South Dakota, whose abbreviation is SD: the Systolic comes first and the Diastolic comes second.)
